This month’s walking tour starts at the entrance of Chuvit Park, located at the corner of Sukhumvit Soi 10. A small pretty garden here is overshadowed by its scandalous history. Khun Chuvit, the benefactor of the park, was Bangkok’s biggest massage parlour owner. He was arrested in 2003 for illegally bulldozing, rather than legally evicting, tenants off the land where the park now stands.

We will continue walking via the elevated walkway that connects Sukhumvit Soi 10 with Lumpini Park. It runs between the Tobacco Monopoly and a waterway, past high-rise condominiums, across an expressway and bridges an extensive traditional wooden housing area (Ban Kai). In the evenings it becomes playground, gym and meeting place.

The walkway leads us to Lumpini Park, which was named after Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal. The city park provides a relaxing and relatively peaceful retreat from the heat and noise of the city. Just after sunrise hordes of people can be spotted jogging, doing aerobics, practicing tai chi, yoga or even ballroom dancing. If we are lucky we will see monitor lizards.

After walking around the park we continue to Soi Tonson. It is time for lunch for those who can stay. From here we will decide how to get home (taxi, BTS, etc).

Limit: 15 persons
