AWC Scholarship Committee

~The Gift of Education Lasts a Lifetime~

What is the Scholarship Program?

Each year, approximately 400 needy students are supported by private sponsorship so that they can attend the last three years of Thai high school. Recognizing the need for young women to complete their schooling, the Scholarship Committee focuses on female students. Scholarships of US$150 per year are provided through this sponsor-driven program.

Even though the Thai government has abolished the charging of tuition, schools still charge fees for classes such as computer and typing (which are required courses) along with other fees such as library fees, books and uniforms. Students are also charged for lunch and transportation. In conclusion, all of these expenses add up to about 6,000 baht per year. Since rice farmers usually net less than 25,000 baht (US$700) per year, many families cannot afford to pay the cost.

We invite you to join us!

The Scholarship Committee is actively seeking additional committee members interested in volunteer work. We have monthly meetings, and your contribution could be home-based or AWC office-based, depending on your situation and availability. Even just a few hours a month are appreciated! If you are interested in the scholarship program, please contact us <scholars@awcthailand.org> or attend our regularly scheduled meeting on the second Monday of the month at 11:30 a.m. at the clubhouse.

Scholarship Notecards drawn by students!

The American Women's Club Scholarship program had a drawing contest for our scholarship students. The response was tremendous! The drawings and paintings submitted were simply too good to keep to ourselves. We've taken four of our favorites and made notecards out of them. Packages of 8 cards are now available for the great price of 200 baht. Proceeds go towards the Scholarship Program. If you are interested in these cards, please stop by the AWC clubhouse or contact us.

A letter from one of the students:

Dear American's Women's Club of Thailand
Hello! How are you? My name is Suchada. I'm 18 year old. I am studying in M 6 at a school in the northeast. I'm the one who got your scholarship. I am very pleasure with your kindness and a good opportunity. I used to think that my parents can't support me to study and I need some help from someone, but that dream can't come true. The one thing I have to do is the best I can. Don't think about money because money and my dream cannot go together. I always told this to myself. Today I got some help from you. You shine a light on me. I feel like my dream came true. I am very happy, as well as my parents. I would like to see the other people feel like this way. This make them feel they are not staying in a bad world but there are some good people around them. I want to share this feeling. I will study hard because this is the only thing that I can return to you. Thank you very much.Your kindness will always stay in my memories. The best I have to say to you is thank you very much
