Charity recipients for the AWC Gala Dinner 2012

Let us tell you a little bit about the exciting projects we will support which aim to assist senior citizens here in Thailand.

Our first recipient is the Ruth Center, a special project under the umbrella of the Project L.I.F.E Foundation whose belief is that every life counts. This is a hands-on project, that works directly with seniors in Bangkok slum communities. They care for more than 200 seniors in ways that bring not only help but also joy into the lives of these seniors, who are alone in the community. Ruth Center supports the aged by giving them transportation to and from doctor appointments, and daily visits to check on them, listen, and lend a hand. They supplement food when necessary and fund small construction projects within the slums. The direct one-on-one interaction between the Ruth Center staff and the seniors is what makes this group so special. They bring hope to these seniors who are alone by just being there to listen, and letting them know that someone DOES care. If you haven't had a chance, please watch the Ruth Center video:

Our second charity is EDF, The Education for Development Foundation.
EDF currently funds more than 10,000 scholarships per year for underprivileged students in Thailand. They are a strong foundation with 25 years experience. Due to that experience and relationship with communities throughout the country, they have put together a pilot project that specifically addresses a growing concern in Thailand. The project is aptly named "Senior Citizens Smiles" and will work to bridge the ever-widening gap between two generations ~ the elderly and their own grandchildren.

As working-age adults (parents) have migrated to Bangkok and other provinces for work, it is usually left to the grandparents / seniors to care for their grandchildren, often times alone. The aim of the project will be to give the seniors healthcare information, guidance and advice to enable them to better care for themselves and their grandchildren. They will involve the senior citizens and grandchildren in joint activities to help build self-confidence in both groups and better relations between the generations.

Seniors will be brought together with their grandchildren in two schools in Udon Thani Province. Together, they will focus on healthcare, physical education, healthy eating, self-sufficiency, better mental health through meditation and the wisdom of the aged as they share their life stories with the younger generation. The overall goal is greater interaction between the generations and happier, healthier families. You can discover more about EDF by visiting their website, www.edfthai.org.

So how can we all help?
  • Purchasing tickets and attending the Gala Dinner 2012 is a great start.  A portion of every ticket sold will go directly to fund these special project.
  • If you're unable to attend the Gala, then please consider making a donation to AWC. 100% of all cash donations will go to our recipients.
With your generous support, we can contribute to these vital projects and give back to this forgotten segment of society.

Contact us with any questions or to learn how to go about making a personal donation.
